We know what you’re thinking, “another cocktail recipe today?!” Since it’s the official launch of Rough Cut Soap Co.’s "The Cocktail Collection” and Carlton Ladies Night, it IS a special occasion. That’s why we’re bringing you the 4th of 6 cocktails that inspired Rough Cut’s “Woodsy, citrusy and seductively scented” handcrafted soap, the Ward 8. Reportedly created in 1898 in Boston to celebrate the election of one Martin M. Lomasney and the city’s eighth ward, which historically delivered him a winning margin, this riff on a Rye Whiskey Sour substitutes some of the lemon juice with orange and the simple syrup is replaced by grenadine. Our Carlton Rye Whiskey truly sings in the pre Prohibition libation. Try it for yourself at the Carlton Post tonight for Carlton Business Association’s Ladies Night and/or make it by following the recipe below. Cheers!
Ward 8
Ingredients - 2 oz Bull Run Carlton Rye - ¾ oz fresh squeezed & strained lemon juice - ¾ oz fresh squeezed & strained orange juice - 1-2 teaspoons Grenadine (make your own*) - Garnish: orange slice
Directions Add Carlton Rye, the fruit juices, and grenadine into the shaker. Fill with ice and shake well. Strain into a coupe, Nick & Nora, or martini glass. Garnish with an orange slice.
*Homemade Grenadine: Combine 2 cups real pomegranate juice (the good stuff), and 2 cups sugar into a saucepan. Bring to a slow boil, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow mixture to cool then pour into a small decanter or bottle with a tight sealing lid. Add a dash or two of Orange Blossom Water, not too much! Seal and give the bottle a good shake. Date the bottle and keep in the fridge.
